According to sources, the San Jose Sharks and the city of San Jose are getting close to an agreement regarding a new lease at the SAP Center.

SHD has been told that a deal with the city is “imminent.” The next step is to go to the city council for approval.

In May, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan told the Mercury News that the city would heavily invest in the SAP Center.

“Here in San Jose, we’ve had a hometown team that has helped put San Jose on the map for over 30 years,” Mahan said. “When the city council officially approves our new agreement, they’ll be here for at least 25 more.”

Sharks president Jonathan Becher told fans during a season ticket holder event back in January that talks with the city were positive.

The San Jose Sharks’ home arena is home to more than just hockey. With an agreement of a new deal reportedly on the horizon, the “heavy investments” Mahan spoke about in May can truly be put into motion.

While the SAP Center is home to the Sharks, it actually hosts more non-hockey events than hockey events.

SHD wasn’t informed of any timeline for when the agreement, if/when finalized, will be presented to the City Council.
