FRESNO, Calif (FOX26) — A rattlesnake was found at a playground in Chico.

The Chico Police Department says the snake was found by officers Tuesday afternoon at a playground at Hooker Oak Park.

I ssssspy with my little eye, a roaming rattlesnake basking in the Chico sunshine.

Officers remind the community that Summer is here, meaning it’s snake season.

Here are some tips they give if you come across one:

  • Stop
  • Stay calm
  • Slowly back away
  • Keep a safe distance
  • Maintain a visual
  • Call for help (9-1-1 is OK)

Snakes are not normally aggressive, but many bites occur when someone tries to pick up one of these slithery strangers.

Another common way people are bitten is by stepping over a log, rock, or piece of equipment, so be sure to check the other side first.
