Main Street Bridge reopens at noon Friday after weeklong closure for inspection

  • August 15, 2025

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Main Street Bridge (State Road 5) will reopen at noon on Friday after a weeklong bridge inspection and maintenance project that closed the bridge to pedestrians, drivers and cyclists.

The work was part of a larger rehabilitation effort to evaluate the bridge’s mechanical systems and structural health.

Crews conducted a LiDAR (Laser Imaging, Detection, and Ranging) scan, along with a full mechanical inspection of the bridge’s lift system. This includes the trunnion bearings — large pivot points that act like the bridge’s “shoulder joints,” allowing it to open and close for vessel traffic.

“These parts wear down over time,” FDOT said in a statement, “and the data collected this week will help engineers plan a major trunnion replacement scheduled for early 2028.”

Vessels traveling beneath the Main Street Bridge were not impacted by the closure.

To stay updated on lane closures and traffic impacts, drivers can follow FDOT District 2 on X (@MyFDOT_NEFL) or Facebook (@MyFDOTNEFL). Real-time traffic alerts are also available at FL511.com or via the FL511 app.
