The brain chip company Merge Labs, which has attracted interest from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is considering genetically modifying brain cells to enhance implants, according to Bloomberg. The approach would involve gene therapy and an implanted ultrasound device to detect and modulate activity in modified cells.

Altman confirmed the venture is still in early stages and could evolve. He expressed interest in developing brain-computer interfaces that allow direct interaction with AI like ChatGPT. Merge Labs is competing with Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which focuses on electrical signal-based brain implants.

According to the IndexBox platform, the global neurotechnology market, including brain-computer interfaces, is projected to grow significantly, driven by advancements in medical and cognitive enhancement technologies. Merge Labs is reportedly seeking $250 million in funding at an $850 million valuation, with backing from OpenAI’s ventures team.

Other companies, such as Nudge, co-founded by Fred Ehrsam, and ventures supported by Reid Hoffman, are also exploring non-invasive ultrasound-based brain therapies. Research into sonogenetics—genetically altering cells to respond to ultrasound—has been ongoing but may take years to yield practical applications.
