PHOENIX — Valley drivers will have two freeway closures to avoid this weekend.

The Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT) Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Aug. 15-18 showed that a major route drivers use to access downtown Phoenix will see both directions closed at different times.

The portion of southbound Interstate 17 that runs from the “Stack” interchange west of downtown Phoenix and the “Split” interchange near Sky Harbor International Airport will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The northbound side of the freeway will close in the same area the next night, from 9 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday.

These closures are due to pavement maintenance.

While southbound I-17 is closed, drivers will be able to avoid the closure using eastbound I-10.

During the closure of northbound I-17, drivers should take westbound I-10 through downtown Phoenix and then get back on I-17 near 19th Avenue.

Other weekend closures to note

No other freeways will close this weekend, but multiple ramps will be shut down.

The ramps from the eastbound Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway to north- and southbound I-17 in north Phoenix closed at 12:30 a.m. on Friday and will remain closed until 5 a.m. on Aug. 29 due to pavement repairs.

To access I-17 during this closure, ADOT advises drivers to exit Loop 101 at 35th Avenue and then use Deer Valley Road or Union Hills Drive.

Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will be closed overnight in both directions at the Loop 101 Pima Freeway in Scottsdale for bridge work.

The closure will be in place from 9 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday. Drivers will be detoured on the Loop 101 frontage roads during this closure.

The on-ramp from Val Vista Drive to the westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Gilbert will also be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Sunday. This is due to the ongoing freeway widening project in the area.

The right lane of westbound Loop 202 will be closed from Val Vista Drive to Lindsay Road during this closure.

To access westbound Loop 202, drivers should use the on-ramps at Santan Village Parkway or Lindsay Road.

ADOT added that the on-ramp from McQueen Road to the eastbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway will be closed from 4 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, as well.
