New York Attorney General Letitia James says civil rights leader Dr. Hazel Dukes used to call her over the years to get more involved in the community, while Charlie Rangel would call her “that girl from Brooklyn.”

James says they inspired her work in public service and discussed how Hazel Dukes was instrumental in the Voting Rights Act, which celebrates 60 years this week.

James says the work of civil rights activists like Rangel is currently being attacked by the federal government and offers what she thinks Dr. Dukes would do today.
