Trey Ebel has been watching the Dick’s Perfect Game All-American Classic since he was a kid.

Sunday, Ebel, son of Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Dino Ebel, got a chance to play in the 23rd annual game at Petco Park.

He entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning and promptly singled to center field and then stole second. He walked with the bases loaded in the eighth in a game the West  led 9-4 in the eighth inning.

Trey has grown up in big-league ballparks. Still, the Corona High School standout admitted that Petco Park is “pretty special.”

“We were here on Father’s Day and I got to shag in the outfield during batting practice, and take ground balls,” he said. “Padres fans are really into the game. And it’s loud here, really loud.”

Corona went 28-3 last season, losing to Bellflower St. John Bosco in the CIF Southern Section  Division 1 championship game.

Ebel hit .314 with a pair of homers, seven doubles, two triples and 22 RBIs. He struck out just 18 times in 119 plate appearances and made just four errors at shortstop.

He has committed to play college ball at Texas A&M.

A record three players from that Corona team were drafted in the first round, including Ebel’s older brother, Brady.

Pitcher Seth Hernandez went No. 6 overall to Pittsburgh, shortstop Billy Carlson went No. 10 to the Chicago White Sox and Brady Ebel went No. 32 to Milwaukee.

“Brady is a great older brother,” Trey said. “We did everything together. When he was going through the draft stuff, I felt like I was going through it with him. I cried when he was drafted.”

Brady Ebel, who had a college commitment to LSU, signed with the Brewers and is now playing for their Rookie team in Arizona.

Dino Ebel played professionally for six seasons and has coached in the minors and majors for more than 30 years. He was with the Angels during Mike Trout’s younger days and when Albert Pujols was with the team. He joined Dave Roberts’ Dodgers staff in 2019.

“Getting to watch guys like Trout and Pujols, to see how hard they work, was amazing,” Trey Ebel said. “They’re superstars, but they were so humble.

“My brother and I are so blessed to have a father like we have. For a 7 o’clock game at Dodger Stadium, he leaves the house at 10:30 in the morning. He does it because big leaguers work harder than people think. Mookie Betts takes 200 ground balls every day. And my dad is there to hit them. Mookie works so hard on his hitting … all the players do. Playing is a grind and we get to see things other kids don’t.

“That’s why we have such a great appreciation for the game. We are so blessed to be in the position we’re in.”

San Diegan starts

AJ Curry of University City High School, San Diego’s only representative in the game, started at first base for the West. He made two nice plays at first base, grounded out sharply in his first at-bat and walked in his second.

• Brady Harris had an RBI triple for the East on a ball that split the alley in left-center field.

• Martin Shelar of the East knocked in two runs with a base-loaded single in the fifth. Carson May followed with a RBI groundout.

• Alain Gomez-Gudino, Cole Prosek and Eric Zdunek had RBI singles in a five-run West fifth inning. EJ Booth also stole home in that inning. Propek also had an RBI single in the seventh.

Speed kills

There were 18 pitchers in the game, and all threw 93 mph or better. Savion Sims of the West topped them all, hitting 96 mph.

Home Run Derby

EJ Booth, an outfielder from Mississippi, won the Home Run Derby, edging Jaxson Wood of Alabama.

Booth is committed to play at Vanderbilt. Wood is committed to Tennessee, as is Curry.
