How to stay fit in your 50s
Fitness experts say physical activity is crucial after 50 because the body loses muscle and bone density, metabolism slows, and chronic disease risk rises. Regular exercise maintains strength, flexibility, and balance, reduces fall risk, and supports mental health.
Jitendra Chouksey, Health Educator, Founder and CEO of Fittr, says it’s never too late to start exercising. However, consult your doctor first if you have any medical conditions. He shares simple ways to stay fit after 50.
Fitness expert-approved tips to stay fit
Owaisi’s workout also reminded people that fitness doesn’t have to be complicated. Chouksey suggests starting with simple exercises that can be done at home or in a gym:
1. Focus on consistency
Short daily routines of 10–15 minutes or 10–15 reps can make a big difference. “Think of exercise like brushing your teeth, skip a day if needed, but don’t stress,” said Chouksey. Chair stand-ups help strengthen legs and improve mobility.
2. Bodyweight exercises
Bodyweight exercises can maintain strength without gym equipment. Wall push-ups and heel-to-toe walking are simple and effective.
– Wall push-ups: Stand at arm’s length from a wall, bend and straighten elbows. Builds upper body strength and supports heart health.
– Heel-to-toe walk: Walk in a straight line, placing heel in front of toes. Improves balance and lowers the risk of falls.
3. Exercises to improve heart health
Light cardio and balance exercises keep joints healthy and the heart strong. Chouksey suggests exercises like:
– Marching in place: Lift knees while standing tall. Use a chair for support if needed.
– Standing side leg raises: Hold a chair, lift one leg sideways, then switch. Strengthens hips and improves stability.
4. Strength training
Resistance exercises help preserve muscle and bone strength.
– Seated arm curls: Curl light dumbbells or water bottles. Maintains muscle and bone health.
– Toe and heel raises: Rise onto tiptoes, then rock back on heels. Boosts posture, leg strength, and balance.
5. Hydration, nutrition, and rest
Fitness experts believe that exercise alone isn’t enough. Drink enough water, include protein in meals, and get proper rest. “Hydration, nutrition, and recovery are as important as exercise,” said Chouksey.
By actively participating in the gym session, Owaisi set an example for people of all ages. And hence, now it’s time for you to lace up your shoes and start working out for yourself.
