SAN ANTONIO — Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is poised to propose a resolution this week to delay the terms of a deal between the city and the San Antonio Spurs regarding Project Marvel, a proposed entertainment district.

A source told reporters that the mayor is pushing for an independent study to assess the economic impact of the project, despite opposition from the majority of the city council.

The city council had already agreed on a term sheet to advance Project Marvel, with a vote scheduled for later this month.

Now, the agenda for the next city council meeting reveals the mayor’s intention to halt the development, taking several council members off guard.

The Spurs are reportedly frustrated by the mayor’s move, as the terms had been finalized after negotiations over the weekend.

City Manager Erik Walsh is expected to update the city council this week, aiming for a vote on the 27th. The project hinges on two tax measures: a hotel/rental car tax vote in November and an infrastructure tax vote in the spring. Both must pass for the project to proceed.

Mayor Ortiz Jones has expressed her desire to delay the vote until more independent economic analysis is conducted. Despite her stance, the majority of the city council has disagreed with the mayor, setting the stage for a potentially contentious city council meeting on Thursday.

We’re being told there is nothing to keep council members or the city manager from advancing their own item to push the term sheet through.
