Today’s Big Stories

1. Injury count rises in Brooklyn club shooting as police identify two gunmen

The injury count from Sunday’s mass shooting at a Brooklyn nightclub climbed today after two more people sought treatment for gunshot wounds at city hospitals, Mayor Eric Adams said.

Officials on Sunday said a shooting at Taste of the City Lounge in Crown Heights left three people dead and nine others wounded. Speaking to reporters this morning, Adams said the injury count had since risen to 11.

2. NYPD expands quality-of-life teams to Staten Island

The NYPD has expanded its quality-of-life teams to every precinct on Staten Island, making it the final borough to receive the units, city officials announced today.

The department launched the “Q-Teams” in April to tackle everyday issues impacting New Yorkers. Their duties include cracking down on illegal mopeds, towing abandoned vehicles, cleaning encampments, addressing outdoor drug use and responding to noise complaints.

3. Citi Bike to add age checks after city officials raise safety concerns

Citi Bike users will soon have to verify their age to ride, after city officials raised concerns about underage use of e-bikes.

Lyft, which owns and operates Citi Bike, agreed to add age checks following a letter from First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro. In his letter, he said too many riders under 16 had been spotted using the bikes, often without helmets or other safety gear, despite the company’s terms of service setting the minimum age at 16.

4. Zelenskyy and Trump meet at White House as European leaders gather for talks on Russia’s war

President Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the White House today, days after the U.S. leader held a closely-watched summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska as he pushes for an end to the war in Ukraine.

After meeting with a parade of European leaders earlier in the day, Trump welcomed Zelenskyy for his second Oval Office meeting since the U.S. president returned to power in January.

5. Trump vows to target mail-in ballots, suggests he could sign an executive order to end the practice

President Donald Trump today vowed to lead a “movement” to do away with the option for Americans to vote by mail as well as target “Seriously Controversial” voting machines. The pledge revives his crusade against a method of voting he has long railed against.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump baselessly slammed mail-in ballots as a “HOAX” and suggested his effort to end the practice would come in the form of an executive order ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

6. States sue Justice Department over withheld grants for crime victims

In their latest lawsuit against the Trump administration, a coalition of 21 attorneys general sued the Justice Department and Attorney General Pam Bondi today, alleging they are unlawfully withholding $1 billion in grants for victims of crimes.

The attorneys general, all Democrats, argue the federal government is illegally tying immigration enforcement requirements to the funds.
