A 56-year-old homeless man who was fatally shot in an alley in unincorporated East Los Angeles was identified Monday, as sheriff’s investigators continued searching for a suspect in the shooting that also wounded two other men.

Deputies with the department’s East L.A. sheriff’s station responded at around 2:25 a.m. Saturday to the 5100 block of Whittier Boulevard, near Woods Avenue, where they found three victims, according to according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steven De Jong.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene and was identified Monday by the county Medical Examiner’s office as Juan Gonzalez. He died from a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.

The two other victims were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds to their legs, but had stable signs, De Jong said.

“Investigators learned the victims were transients living in tents in the alley,” the lieutenant said. The unknown suspect “shot at them from Woods Avenue and then fled the scene in an unknown direction.”

The investigation remained ongoing.
