Infielders Pavin Smith and Ildemaro Vargas were activated off the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 10-day injured list on Monday, and they replace outfielder Jorge Barrosa and infielder Connor Kaiser on the roster.
Smith has been away since July 6 with a strained oblique, while Vargas has been out since June 25 after a pitch fractured his foot.
In 79 games, Smith is slashing .262/.371/.446 with 28 RBIs, 40 walks and 84 strikeouts. He has 15 doubles and eight home runs.
Smith has played 48 games as a designated hitter and 27 more as a first baseman. He will start at first as the D-backs open a home series against the Cleveland Guardians, batting in the fifth slot.
Before his injury, the 34-year-old Vargas appeared in 10 games with the D-backs– all in June — and went 8-for-28 (.286) with four RBIs and seven strikeouts.
The 24-year-old Barrosa departs back to the minors with 15 major league games under his belt this year. He struggled at the plate and through 23 MLB outings the past two years is batting a combined .132.
Kaiser played in five games for the Diamondbacks and has two hits and two RBIs in 14 at-bats.
