JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Main Street Bridge in Downtown Jacksonville closed early Tuesday after a boat crash, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Around 2:30 a.m., JSO said the bridge would remain closed for at least six hours for repairs.
The Florida Department of Transportation told News4JAX the bridge will remain closed until crews are 100 percent certain the bridge is safe and reliable, and added the inspectors have a safety checklist they will go through at the site of the incident.
“The bridge is operated 24/7 and was immediately closed for safety. FDOT bridge crews responded immediately and are on-site working to assess the bridge,” an FDOT spokesperson said.
Drivers were encouraged to look for an alternate route.
The bridge’s closure comes just a few days after it reopened on Friday after being closed for a week due to repairs.
