College of Southern Maryland La Plata Campus Bookstore Renovation

LA PLATA, Md. — The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is advancing plans to renovate two of its oldest campus buildings—the Campus Center and Bookstore at the La Plata campus. A petition requesting $13,758,179 in funding is being submitted to the Maryland Higher Education Commission through the Charles County Commissioners.

The planned renovation will address outdated mechanical and electrical systems, many of which are more than 30 years old, and reconfigure building layouts to support student needs. As part of the update, the bookstore and campus center will swap spaces, optimizing square footage now that the bookstore no longer requires a large physical footprint due to increased online ordering and digital course materials.

If approved, the state would contribute 75% of the total cost—$10,318,634—with the remaining 25%, or $3,439,545, to be provided by Charles County over fiscal years 2027 through 2029.

The project would begin with design work in fiscal 2027, followed by construction in the years that follow.
