A man was killed and another man was injured in a double shooting in South Philadelphia late Tuesday night.
Philadelphia police responded to a reported shooting on the 600 block of Mountain Street shortly after 11:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found a 23-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder as well as a 37-year-old man nearby on the sidewalk who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds throughout his body.
Both men were taken to the hospital. The 37-year-old man – who has not yet been identified – was pronounced dead at 12:12 a.m. The 23-year-old man is in stable condition, police said.
Three parked and unattended vehicles in the area were also struck by gunfire.
A resident, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10 he heard the shooting.
“It was bad. It was a lot of shots,” the man said. “And it was odd for this part. Like there hasn’t been nothing for this neighborhood, in this particular area, in a while.”
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told NBC10 investigators found more than 30 spent shell casings on the sidewalk as well as a semiautomatic handgun at the scene of the shooting.
Police have not released a description of any suspects in the shooting. Investigators did find several nearby properties with surveillance video, however.
As of Aug. 19, there have been 143 reported homicides in Philadelphia so far in 2025, down more than 16% from the same time last year which ultimately saw the fewest number of homicides in the city in a decade, according to police data.
