Overview

Torrey Pines High School senior Zoe Jiamanukoonkit will try to make history this fall. No San Diegan has ever won two state titles. Jiamanukoonkit, bound for Cal, won the title as a sophomore in 2022, then placed second last year, losing in a playoff. Only one girls golfer has earned two state titles. Jenny Shin of Torrance High School won back-top-back crowns in 2008 and ’09.

Torrey on top

Torrey Pines has won six state titles, more than any other school. “Our goal is always to win the state championship,” said Torrey Pines coach Chris Drake, who has coached five of those championship teams.

“I like to set that as our expectation.”

The Falcons have won San Diego Section championships 17 of the past 25 years, including the last six years.

Is this RB’s time?

Rancho Bernardo is narrowing the distance on Torrey Pines. In 2022, the Broncos finished 32 strokes behind the Falcons in the section championship. In 2023, RB finished 80 strokes behind Torrey.

Last year’s difference: three strokes. RB beat Torrey Pines twice last season.

“Chris is going to have his hands full this year,” said Rancho Bernardo assistant coach Alex Moreno. “We’re closing the gap.”
