It is National Radio Day and here is a quick way to celebrate Buffalo’s Number One for New Country, 106.5 WYRK! With over 40 years on the air in Buffalo, WYRK has a long history of providing the Western New York community with great music, concerts and local events! You may have been listening for your entire life to the station and wondered what it is like behind the scenes? Here is a quick video tour!
The studio, along with WBLK, The New 96.1 and WBUF is located on the 12th floor of the historic Rand Building in Lafayette Square in downtown Buffalo. It was previously on the 5th floor and was located in the Hotel Lafayette before that! As radio technology, and needs for space changed, the 12th floor has been a great spot for the station.
See The VIDEO Below…
The view might be the best part of the tour? From 12 floors up, you can see for miles! On a clear day, you can easily see both Highmark Stadiums and the hills at Chestnut Ridge Park! When we have had in-person tours in the past, the view seems to be the star of the show. Even though we have the latest radio technology, seeing Lake Erie from our window is a great experience.
I won’t bore you with the hundreds of crazy things that I have witnessed from that vantage point in the studio. I plan to save that for the book I am going to write one day. However, after nearly 30 years of being in the WYRK studio, it is safe to say that I, and the rest of the on-air staff, have seen history unfold on the other side of the glass.
A Big Thanks To YOU
But the real reason WYRK has been so strong in Buffalo for so long, is truly because of the people that are scattered about Buffalo and Western New York who are on the other side of that glass and our microphone that listen to the broadcasts we provide.
I think that National Radio Day is a day to celebrate YOU, the listener. Radio is nothing without that one-on-one relationship that we have around the clock. Over the course of our history, WYRK and you, the listener, have shared some incredible moments! Most of them have been filled with laughs and great music! Others have been somber and sincere. I think back to the terror attacks on 9-11 and how the radio station, and this great community, stepped up to help the Red Cross and bring neighbors together for a common good. THAT is what radio is about and we can’t do that without you!
I could go on about more amazing things we have done together. But that might also make for a few good chapters in my book!?
On behalf of our crew here at WYRK and Townsquare Media, thank you and happy National Radio Day!
One of those great concerts we put together is coming soon! Lee Brice will headline the WYRK Stars With Guitars Show on September 17 at UB!
