Superheroes are teaming up with endangered species in the Phoenix Zoo’s newest art exhibit, Comic Conservation, opening Sept. 4.

The Wild Side Gallery will showcase original works from acclaimed comic artists across the Southwest and beyond, blending pop culture with the zoo’s conservation mission. Visitors can expect everything from superhero-inspired scenes to animal-focused illustrations, each with its own creative spin on protecting the natural world.

Among the lineup are big names in the comic industry, including Jay Fotos, Mark Kidwell, Meredith McClaren, Ryan Huna Smith, Jeff Pina and Hanna Strauss. The exhibit will also feature a signed print by Todd McFarlane – the legendary creator of Spawn, co-creator of Venom and one of the most celebrated Spider-Man artists of all time.

“Comics are a powerful and widely loved art form,” said Bert Castro, Phoenix Zoo president and CEO. “Their visual storytelling and pop culture appeal make them an engaging and effective way to bring conservation messaging to the masses in a fun, approachable way.”

The exhibit runs through Jan. 25 and is open Thursdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission to the Wild Side Gallery is included with general zoo entry.

To mark the launch, the zoo will host a special event Oct. 4 featuring games, activities, artist meet-and-greets, character mascots and a surprise celebrity guest.
