STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City residents will want to keep an umbrella handy on Wednesday, as it is set to rain well into the evening.

A front passing near the city will continue to bring rainfall to the five boroughs, conditions will worsen in the evening hours.

“Not out of the question that maybe this evening into the nighttime hours that there’s some downpours that lead to some localized flooding,” Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, told the Advance/SILive.com.

Heavy rain should hold off throughout the daylight hours, but “downpours” could begin as early as Wednesday evening and occur in the overnight hours into Thursday, according to Kines.

The National Weather Service notes that showers are likely Wednesday afternoon and thunderstorms are possible after 5 p.m. Areas impacted by thunderstorms could see elevated rainfall amounts .

While flooding is possible in the city, particularly in poor drainage areas, the situation is shaping up to be worse for nearby cities.

“I think if you head north, up into the Hudson Valley and probably over into parts of southern New England, those folks could see a bigger threat for flooding,” he added.

As emphasized by AccuWeather, the highest risk for concentrated downpours is expected in parts of central and eastern New York, another area slated to receive downpours extends from southern New Jersey to Long Island, southern Connecticut and Rhode Island.

By the time all is said and done, the city is forecast to receive anywhere between a half-inch to an inch of rain, Kines said.

Despite the potentially heavy rain, Kines clarified that this front is not an impact related to Hurricane Erin, which is forecast to bring dangerous conditions to the East Coast in the days ahead.
