World No. 1 Jannik Sinner suffered his “worst nightmare” when he got sick last weekend during the Cincinnati Open and had to retire in Monday’s final against Carlos Alcaraz.

Speaking Wednesday on ESPN, Sinner’s coach, ESPN broadcaster Darren Cahill, added that Sinner suffered from a “virus” that caused him to pull out down 5-0 to Alcaraz on Monday.

The 24-year-old Italian is the defending U.S. Open singles champion and has won three of the last four major titles, including Wimbledon earlier this summer.

He pulled out of the Mixed Doubles event at the U.S. Open but is expected to be fine by the time the singles tournament starts on Sunday.

“I spoke to him briefly last night. He was feeling a bit better last night,” Cahill said on air. “He will take today off as well, that’s the plan, and hopefully get on the court [Thursday] and start hitting a few balls….We are confident he’s going to be fine.”

The draw is Thursday and the singles tournament starts Sunday.

“The good news for Sinner is that it’s not an injury, so the illness, they’ll get over that in a couple of days,” ESPN’s Patrick McEnroe said on a conference call.
