Houston – Houston is one of the most diverse cities in America and now, local students are getting the chance to experience that diversity up close, totally free of charge. Thanks to a grant from the Southwest Management District, Houston Asiatown Tours is opening the doors for 5th–12th graders to explore the culture, history, and food of Houston’s Asiatown without ever leaving the city.
Founded by Cathy Podell, Houston Asiatown Tours has been introducing private groups to the rich cultural traditions of Houston’s Asian community for over four years. But with the new grant, the program is now reaching underserved schools that might not otherwise have access to these experiences. So far, more than 200 students have already participated in the tours, with applications continuing to roll in.
Students spend the day visiting landmarks like the Teo Chew Temple and Asiatown’s vibrant murals, while also enjoying hands-on lessons. From learning how to use chopsticks at a traditional dim sum lunch, to blending custom teas with Tea Master Connie Lacobie, the tours offer both taste and tradition. For many students, it’s their very first time trying Asian food, sipping boba tea, or even walking through these cultural hubs right in their own backyard. They have partnered with these small businesses to make it all happen!
