Fort Worth has spoken: Cowtown loves dumplings. In fact, the city loves them so much that local, habitually-packed restaurant Teddy Wongs, currently tucked in a corner on Rosedale Street, is expanding west to nearby Weatherford.
Announced by the restaurant via Facebook Thursday but first reported by Bud Kennedy at Fort Worth Star-Telegram Tuesday, Teddy Wongs’ second digs will open this fall in Weatherford’s downtown square at 102 Houston Ave., a spot previously occupied by Zeno’s, which recently moved to a larger space.
The Asian restaurant, known around Cowtown for its delectable steamed dumplings and exceptional wine list, first opened its doors in the Near Southside in late 2023. “The restaurant serves nearly a dozen varieties of Chinese dumplings in flavors such as chicken and celery, mushroom and pork, shrimp, and veggie, in your choice of preparation, pan-fried or steamed,” the magazine’s resident foodie Malcolm Mayhew wrote after the spot opened.
As reported in the same article, Teddy Wongs is a spinoff of Bushi Bushi Dim Sum in Addison, which chef Patrick Ru opened in 2020. He then teamed with Jeffrey Yarbrough, a Fort Worth native and hospitality industry veteran, to bring a similar concept to Fort Worth.
After opening, Teddy Wongs received widespread acclaim and was named one of Fort Worth Magazine’s Best New Restaurants in 2024.
Teddy Wongs had teased an expansion on social media Wednesday with a Facebook post that requested followers of the page to guess the spot of their second location. “Word around Cowtown is that Teddy Wongs might be expanding and taking our bold flavors and famous dumplings somewhere new,” the post read.
And, with Kennedy’s article having already spoiled the surprise, we’ll have you know that most guessed Weatherford — with the occasional jokester suggesting something like Gaza.
Kennedy’s rain on the parade aside, Teddy Wongs also assures dumpling devotees that their spot on Rosedale Street ain’t going anywhere. “Don’t worry, the fun isn’t over,” a Facebook post reads. “This is just the beginning…”
