A fast casual chain that operates over 20 restaurants in the tri-state area is coming to Jersey City’s Journal Square as Teriyaki One is opening inside a major transit hub.

The restaurant company, headquartered in Elmhurst Queens, will be opening inside a long-dormant space at 1 Path Plaza across the way from the Starbucks outpost. The Japanese eatery is known for fresh, made‑to‑order teriyaki, bento boxes, poke bowls, and sushi rolls that are made with healthier ingredients and no MSG.

Chicken, beef, shrimp, and salmon varieties are all accounted for at Teriyaki One, whose bento boxes include sides like dumplings and vegetarian spring rolls. Their poke bowls allow diners to customize their proteins and sauces, while sides like shrimp tempura and avocado salad round out the menu.

The brand has a trio of existing Garden State locations in Rutherford, Union, and South Plainfield, making the Journal Square outpost their fourth Garden State spot. An exact opening date has not been announced, but construction work is well underway at the storefront.

Journal Square has seen a building boom in recent years and the neighborhood’s transportation center, which houses the PATH train and a myriad of bus lines, has also seen an overhaul. Besides the Starbucks, Jollibee, Wendy’s, and Taco Bell have also opened in the transit hub, which sees foot traffic of about 56,000 commuters per day and counting.
