Punahou was able to put plays together and gain momentum Friday against Lincoln, and then the Hornets seized it back and then some.
Lincoln scored the first 17 points of the third quarter to cap a 24-0 run, then put up 20 unanswered in the fourth in a 57-29 victory over Punahou in a non-league game at Roosevelt.
“We missed tackles. You have to finish plays,” Punahou coach Nate Kia said. “You have to win one-on-one battles and we didn’t do that.”
Rashad Robinson rushed 12 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns for Lincoln, ranked No. 11 in California by MaxPreps.
The Hornets seized control after halftime, starting with Adell Nunez’s 29-yard field goal on the first possession of the second half to put them ahead 23-14.
A key sequence came shortly after when Lincoln’s DeAndre Williams intercepted a deflected pass the Hornets’ 4.

On the next play, Robinson scored on a 96-yard run to put Lincoln ahead 30-14 with 6:15 remaining in the quarter.
“Earlier in the game, my coach actually got on me. We tipped the rock. I missed it the first time, I had to make a play the second time,” Williams said of the interception. “When the play comes to you, you just have to make the play and celebrate with your guys.”
Williams made an impact on special teams on the Buffanblu’s next drive by blocking a punt and returning it two yards for a touchdown, which put the Hornets ahead 37-14 with 4:48 remaining in the third.
“I saw the play. I know I can block stuff, I’m all over the field. As soon as I saw it, I went for it,” Williams said.
Said Lincoln coach David Dunn: “Those were huge plays from (Williams). Concentrating to make the interception and blocking that kick and picking it up and scoring.”
The Buffanblu (1-2) cut the deficit to 37-21 on Bryce Tomas’ 6-yard run with 1:05 to go in the third, and to 37-29 on Hunter Fujikawa’s 4-yard pass to Parker Noland with 11 seconds remaining in the third. Fujikawa ran in the two-point conversion.
The second touchdown came one play after Dane Kellner’s interception and 52-yard return.
Then Lincoln, of San Diego, took control in the fourth.
The Hornets went up 44-29 on Junior Curtis’ 1-yard run with 10:29 remaining. The drive was only 43 yards because the Buffanblu were penalized on the kickoff for unsportsmanlike conduct after their touchdown pass.
The Hornets (1-0) went ahead 51-29 on Jordan Roa’s 13-yard pass to Courtney Miller-Thompson with 4:39 remaining.
Lincoln capped the scoring on Kainan Manna’s 10-yard pass to Jordan Lewis with 1:02 to go.
Punahou’s Fujikawa completed 18 of 41 passes for 208 yards, and Keola Ane caught seven passes for 114 yards.
“Punahou is a good team. They have good fight,” Dunn said.
The Hornets took a 7-0 lead on their second possession on Cam Joy’s 24-yard run off the left side with 6:06 left in the first quarter. Nunez made the PAT kick.
The Buffanblu, ranked No. 7 in the Star-Advertiser poll, tied it at 7-7 with 2:56 remaining on Aaron Johnson’s 2-yard run up the middle and Tyler Endo’s PAT kick.
Lincoln was penalized for encroachment on fourth-and-short, roughing the passer, unsportsmanlike conduct and facemask on the drive.
The Hornets went up 13-7 on Curtis’ 1-yard run with 10:18 left before halftime. Roa extended the drive with a 9-yard quarterback keeper on fourth-and-3, which placed the ball at the Buffanblu 9.
The drive was set up by Jamari Sherell’s interception and 37-yard return to the 22.
Punahou went up 14-13 with a four-play, 47-yard drive, capped by Fujikawa’s 9-yard pass to Brady Lau with 8:35 remaining before halftime.
Lincoln retook the lead at 20-14 on Robinson’s 2-yard run with 6:03 left in the half. The drive consisted of 11 plays and took only 2:32 off the clock.
The Hornets went up 23-14 on the first possession of the second half on Nunez’s 29-yard field goal.
The Hornets’ Roa completed 16 of 21 passes for 170 yards and Manna went 7-for-10 for 82.
