A 20-year-old man is in custody for allegedly firing shots from a van in the Rampart Village community of Los Angeles, authorities said Saturday.

Officers were dispatched at about 4:15 a.m. Thursday to a shots-fired call at Vendome Street and Beverly Boulevard, where someone reported hearing two gunshots and multiple people yelling, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

Upon their arrival, officers heard gunfire coming from the rear of a business in the 3000 block of Beverly Boulevard and allegedly saw Guillermo Calel-Acabal inside a van. The suspect was in possession of a firearm, according to the LAPD.

“An officer-involved shooting occurred,” police said in a statement Saturday. “Following the OIS, officers ordered Calel-Acabal out of the vehicle and took him into custody without further incident.”

Paramedics took Calel-Acabal to a hospital for metal fragments embedded in the top of his head, police said. He was eventually arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer with a firearm.

Police said a loaded black semiautomatic 9-millimeter handgun was recovered in the van, between the driver and passenger seats, and booked as evidence.

No other injuries were reported.
