Obituary For Shawn Marie Hedges Shawn Marie Hedges, 64, passed away in hospice care on June 16, 2025, after a courageous 15-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She faced her illness with the same strength, humor, and positivity that defined her life. Shawn was born on September 22, 1960, in Kitzigen, Germany, the beloved daughter of Eric Samuel “Sam” and Sharon Marie (Sheehy) Hedges. She grew up in Colby, Garden City, and Scott City, Kansas, alongside her siblings Stephen (Deena) Hedges of Galva, KS; Ann (Mike) Fletcher of Topeka, KS; and, at the age of 15, was joined in Scott City by her brother John (Melissa) Hedges of Austin, TX. She was preceded in death by her father. Shawn graduated from Scott Community High School in 1978, where she excelled in varsity basketball and track and field, particularly discus. Standing tall and proud—always quick to respond to the inevitable “How tall are you?” with “How short are you?”—she carried her height with confidence and grace, a hallmark of her presence. She went on to earn her degree in Graphic Arts, magna cum laude, from Fort Hays State University in 1982, along with certifications to teach art at both the elementary and secondary levels. After attending FHSU, she lived briefly in Denver, Colorado, and Leoti, Kansas. During her time in Leoti, she taught high school art and coached basketball, which she loved immensely as it brought out her youthful spirit. In the late 1980s, Shawn moved to Dallas, Texas, where she built a successful career as a print producer and print production manager. Most recently, she served as a production manager at Panini America. At every stage of her career, she created long-lasting friendships that enriched her life and the lives of those around her. Beyond her professional success, Shawn was known for her vivacious spirit, creativity, and love of life. She delighted in time spent with her beloved dogs, Jack and Bear, and cherished moments with family, especially her nieces and nephews: Benjamin (Shasin) Hedges and their children Luke and Mia; Andrew (Jessica) Hedges; Eric Fletcher; Sarah Fletcher; and Gretchen Hedges. Shawn’s joy radiated in many ways: lake days and patio evenings, winery visits with friends, hunting for treasures at estate sales, collecting eccentric pieces of art, and shopping for just-right gifts for family, friends, and neighbors. She especially loved white-elephant gift exchanges, which matched her playful and lighthearted nature. Phone calls with her parents—full of love, laughter, and sometimes pure “BS”—were among her most treasured rituals. Shawn inspired all who knew her with her resilience, warmth, and contagious laughter. Even in her toughest days of cancer treatment, she found ways to laugh and make others smile. Her legacy will live on through the memories, stories, and joy she shared so freely. A celebration of Shawn’s life will be held at the Cross Timbers Winery, 805 N. Main St., Grapevine, TX, on Friday, October 17, from 2-5 pm. The family encourages friends to honor her memory by donating to pancreatic cancer support groups or to Grapevine Animal Services, where she adopted her beloved Bear. You can also honor her memory by simply sharing laughter and kindness with those around you—just as Shawn did every day.
