Glenda Sue Southern Houston, age 77, of Farmington, entered Heaven on August 20, 2025, after passing away peacefully at Willard Walker Hospice House. She was born October 22, 1947, in Fayetteville, Ark., the daughter of Ed Southern and Veta Webber Southern. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ed Southern and Harold and Veta Vines; her brother, Duane Southern; and her first husband, Jerry Birch.
She attended West Fork High School and was a cheerleader, basketball player and homecoming queen. She was a loving wife, mother, and nanny to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She retired the first time from the University of Arkansas, and for the second time from HeadStart. She loved taking care of all her students. When she really retired, she spent her time with her family and tending to her beautiful flower gardens. She loved the Razorbacks, dancing and listening to Elvis Presley.
She is survived by her husband, Herchel Houston; daughters, Kelly Penn (Ernie), and Kendra Whitfield, of Farmington; sister, Lana Hammons, of Farmington; step-children, Scott Houston, of Farmington, Tony Houston, of Louisiana, Lydia Winstead, of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Alexis Beasley, Kylan Whitfield, and Asher Houston, of Farmington, Matthew Thomas, of Bradenton, Fla.; great-grandchildren, True Smith and Karter Walton, of Farmington; and a very special nephew, Clay Hammons, of Farmington.
Honorary Pallbearers are Donnie Hays, Wade Thomas, Ernie Penn, Jeff Oxford and Tony Beasley.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 26, at Moore’s Chapel, from 5 to 7 p.m. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, August 27, at 11 a.m. There will be no graveside service. Cremation is by: Moore’s Chapel.
