Joan R. Schultz

OBITUARY

Joan Schultz passed away August 6, 2025 in La Jolla, California at the age of 85.

Joan was educated in New York City, having attended elementary school in Brooklyn and the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan, ultimately graduating from Lawrence High School after her family moved to the Five Towns. She then attended Barnard College where she studied French and philosophy. Joan’s classmates greatly admired her, and elected her as vice president of her class. Also at Barnard, she met her future husband, Gerald, who was then a medical student. Joan later attended Harvard for a masters degree in French education and literature. After graduating, Joan taught French in Woodmere on Long Island.

Joan was an avid figure skater and a superb artist, as was her father. Her paintings still adorn her home. In her 40s Joan developed Type One insulin dependent diabetes while living in Worcester, Massachusetts. Being a diabetic and a teacher, at the request of a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, she taught a class for resident physicians about how to diagnose, treat and interact with diabetic patients.

A few years after her diagnosis, she and her family moved to San Diego, where Joan loved the weather and the ocean. Despite her illness, Joan traveled extensively throughout the world, often joining her husband at international medical meetings.

Joan was very compassionate and had a deep concern for the welfare of others. She also had a sparkling personality and unique sense of humor that everyone around her adored. She was deeply loved by family and friends around the world and will be missed by all. She leaves behind Gerald, her loving husband of 63 years, sons Frederic and Evan (Jennifer) and grandson Jay. She joins her beloved family — her sister Barbara Harris, who passed away in May, and her parents, Murray and Rose Rosof. Joan is buried at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, New York.
