Syracuse Orange’s Kiyan Anthony gives crazy answer about upstate New York not belonging to NY originally appeared on The Sporting News
It’s the age-old question in New York state:
What is upstate New York?

Is it everything north of the city? Is it everything beginning with Albany and north, stretching west?
Does Buffalo count, or is that Western New York? Does Syracuse count, or is that Central New York?
Everyone has an opinion, including Kiyan Anthony. The son of Carmelo Anthony, who is stepping onto Syracuse’s campus right about now to begin his freshman year as a college basketball player, has a wild take.
Kiyan, who grew up around New York City, says that if you’re not from NYC, you’re not even from New York.
On a stream, this is what Kiyan said:
If you’re not from Brooklyn, Long Island, the Bronx, Manhattan… Long Island, I guess… Queens, Harlem, you’re sturdy. But if you’re from Buffalo, upstate… Even if you’re deep in the island… If you’re from Buffalo, upstate New York, I’m trying to think of other spots.”

Kiyan didn’t finish his thought, or even think of Syracuse.
His message is clear. Things are different in the city.
He’s not wrong, either. The state is mostly run based on what is important to the city, while the rest of the oddly shaped New York state footprint comes along for the ride.
Someone might want to let Kiyan know that his college is part of New York, though. He’ll have plenty of fans as ‘Melo’s son, but it wouldn’t hurt to not perturb them right off the bat by saying they aren’t even a part of NY.
