SAN ANTONIO – After almost a year of implementing the Complete Streets policy, the city of San Antonio is ranked first in the nation as the best policy.
Complete Streets was adopted by the city in 2024 to create safe and accessible streets following the report “Dangerous by Design 2022”, which ranked San Antonio in the top 20 cities that are the most dangerous. The Complete Streets policy will provide ways to travel for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities.
According to a new report from Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition, San Antonio received a score of 96 out of 100 points among 42 other new Complete Streets policies across the country.
Director of Thriving Communities at Smart Growth America Heidi Simon said, “The strongest policies make it safer and easier for people to get where they need to go—whether they’re walking, driving, biking, or taking transit. We applaud San Antonio’s commitment to a policy that’s poised to deliver real, on-the-ground improvements for the people who live there.”
Scoring seven points above its competitors, the city’s policy priorities the needs of the community, especially those who have historically been left out of transportation discussion and decision making. The plans for San Antonio’s Complete Streets policy include sidewalks, bike lanes, bus lanes, street parking and medians.
The city is currently in the process of building the Design Guidance Manual for implementing the policy.
