Re “Don’t copy Trump bullying” (Aug. 22): Attention, Gov. Newsom and the California Legislature: Remember the book “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” by Robert Fulghum? One of the things we learned early in life is that “two wrongs do not make a right.”

We also know, from many, many historical examples, that “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

I implore Newsom and the Legislature to drop their terrible redistricting plan. I will vote against it and will advise everyone I know to do the same. Because it simply isn’t right.

For over 200 years, gerrymandering has been practiced by states to advance one political party’s interests over the opposing party. In 2008, California set up a special commission to fairly draw district maps for the state.

Currently, the Democratic Party (46% of the state electorate) has 83% of California’s 52 seats in the House of Representatives. Our governor has observed that Texas is redistricting to advantage its Republican representation in the House. Our governor hopes to offset Texas by spending a quarter of a billion dollars in taxpayer money to possibly improve California’s Democratic representation in the House.

Is this the way voters really want their tax dollars to be spent?
