Dover man wins Fraternal Order of Police award

DOVER − Robert Everett of Dover was honored by the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police with the Steve Young Lifetime Achievement Award for his FOP involvement. Everett served as president of the Tuscora Lodge No. 4 of the FOP until he was named Dover’s safety director in 2024. Everett was a Dover police officer from 1981 to 2006. He started as a dispatcher and retired as a captain.

In addition, he spent five years with the Mesquite, Nevada, Police Department, director of security at Mercy Medical Center in Canton for five years and a school resource officer/deputy sheriff for Plain Local Schools and the Stark County Sheriff’s Office for nearly five years. He is now director of safety and security at Buckeye Career Center in New Philadelphia.

Pickleball Open coming to Tuscora Park

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The United Way of Tuscarawas County will host its third annual New Philadelphia Pickleball Open on Sept. 1, at Tuscora Park. It will begin at 8 .m. and include men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles tournaments with 16 teams per category. Players with a 4.0 or lower skill rating are encouraged to participate. The first place team in each category will receive a $100 cash prize with second place receiving $50, and the top three teams in each category will receive medals.

The cost to participate is $40 or $60 to participate in two categories. Each player is guaranteed two games. Register at www.tuscunitedway.org/events. Proceeds will benefit the United Way of Tuscarawas County and its 12 service partner agencies.

Multicultural Festival is Sept. 6

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The New Philadelphia Multicultural Festival will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sept. 6, downtown in the city lot outside of Alley Cats Marketplace, Fresh the Market and Lacey’s Performing Arts Center, 115 Allen Lane SW. Hosted by the New Philadelphia Advancing Community Together Organization (NPACT), the event will showcase the community’s diversity through music, entertainment, food trucks, and artisan vendors.

5K run/walk is Aug. 31

DOVER − The Dover American Legion Post 205 will hold a 5K memorial run/walk in conjunction with the city’s End of Summer celebration on Aug. 31. The event will start and end at the softball field next to Dover Middle School. Proceeds will be split between The Jack Reese Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Posts Donation Fund Register at runsignup.com/Race/OH/DoverEndofSummer. Cost is $25 for adults, $20 for 17 and younger.

Philharmonic appoints new executive director

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Tuscarawas Philharmonic Orchestra and Choruses has appointed Emma Hinkle as its new executive director. She will oversee the operations, development initiatives, and community engagement efforts.

Hinkle has a master’s degree of music in horn performance. She has appeared with the Missouri Symphony, South Bend Symphony, Orchestra Iowa, Cleveland Women’s Orchestra, and the Rockford Symphony. Hinkle also participated in the Chicago Summer Opera’s renowned training program.

Car cruise-in and fly-in

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The Wings and Wheels car cruise-in and fly-in will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 31, at Harry Clever Airport, 1834 E. Steam Threshers reunion and show

CADIZ − The Stumptown Steam Threshers Club will hold its 63rd annual reunion Sept. 6-7, at the Harrison County Fairgrounds, 550 Grant St.

Attendees can see steam engines powering an antique sawmill, and an antique threshing machine. A flea market and food will be available. Club T-shirts will be available as well as raffle tickets for a handmade quilt. Admission is $6. Children younger than 12 are admitted free with an adult. Club membership is available for $9. Students learn about government

DOVER – The Dover American Legion Post 205 selected three girls and two boys from last year’s junior class of Dover High School to attend Buckeye Girls and Buckeye Boys State. Participants learn about the rights, privileges, duties and responsibilities of a franchised citizen. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement, presentations and assemblies.

Participants included Lillian Garren, Peyton Grafe, Sydney McCabe, Nathaniel Basso and Cole Griesen.

Leaders of Tomorrow call for speakers

NEW PHILADELPHIA − The annual Leaders of Tomorrow Summit will be March 6 at the Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center. The committee is seeking people to inspire, mentor, and influence today’s high school students. Dogs invited to swim

UHRICHSVILLE – Uhrichsville Waterpark will host a “Dog Days of Summer” event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 31. Well-behaved canines are invited to enjoy an evening of swimming.

This event is open to residents of Tuscarawas County. Each dog must have an adult in control of them at all times. Dogs that are aggressive toward other dogs or people will be asked to leave. All dogs must have proof of current rabies vaccination.

The fee is $5 per dog, or $2.50 with a donation to the Tuscarawas County Humane Society, such as dog or cat food, cat litter, and lightly used blankets, to be brought at the time of entry. All those attending the event will need to sign a liability waiver before entering and must supply their own towels.
