The Worcester Red Sox ended their homestand on a high note with a dominant 8-3 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on Sunday afternoon at Polar Park.
After Kyle Harrison was scratched from his scheduled start, Worcester’s pitchers allowed just one earned run. Chris Murphy pitched three scoreless innings with two strikeouts, Justin Slaten followed that up with a scoreless inning of his own.
The WooSox immediately got on the board in the first thanks to a throwing error from Jumbo Shrimp catcher Brian Navarreto that allowed Kristian Campbell to score from third.
An RBI-triple from Nathan Hickey made it 2-0 before the inning came to a close.
Worcester put up three more runs in the second on a sacrifice fly from Nick Sogard and a two-home home run from Campbell.
A two-run home run from Mikey Romero made it 7-0.
Jacksonville got on the board in the top of the sixth when Connor Norby hit into a fielder’s choice. The Jumbo Shrimp scored in the same fashion in the seventh thanks to Cody Morissette who made it 7-2.
But the WooSox weren’t done hitting homers and Phillip Sikes got in on the fun in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot that gave Worcester a comfortable 8-2 lead.
Alex Hoppe brought Jacksonville within five runs with a solo home run in the top of the eighth, but that’s as close as the team would come.
The WooSox are off Monday before beginning a six-game road trip against the Durham Bulls on Tuesday.
