An 80-year-old man from Carrollton was a victim of elderly financial abuse, court records show.
According to the Dallas District Attorney’s Office, a couple was charged with theft of over $150,000 from an elderly individual.
The defendants are listed as Lori Price and Brian Price, a married couple.
Investigators said the victim initially allowed the Prices to stay in his home for a couple of days. The victim told NBC 5 he lived alone and didn’t know the couple. He said the couple showed up at random and knocked on his door.
Days, however, turned into months.
Neighbors who spoke to NBC 5 said they recognized the mugshots of Lori and Brian. One woman said she remembers Lori driving the victim to the bank on multiple occasions and recalled that the victim said he was being “helped”.
Court records stated that the couple took the victim’s bank card and added themselves to his accounts. According to investigators, the couple also applied for loans using his credit.
During their time in his home, the couple tricked the man into signing a deed to transfer the home tor $100. While the man signed the document, he told officers he could not read or write and was not aware of the document he signed.
The victim eventually called the police after he said Brian would not allow him in. When the police arrived at the home, Brian showed officers the documents to prove ownership of the home and refused further communication or entry into the home. Police also noted that the victim’s wrist was injured by Brian when he attempted to enter his home.
Police were able to arrest Brian that evening for Injury to the Elderly.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office investigated the case. In exchange for their signature to transfer the deed back to the victim, the couple was granted probation and ordered to pay $37 in restitution.
