HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A major traffic alert for drivers on Houston’s northwest side this morning: all mainlanes of Highway 290 westbound are shut down before West Road after an 18-wheeler lost its load in a crash.

Officials said the crash happened around 7:43 a.m. and involved a lost load of bricks. Crews have also called in Life Flight to the scene, underscoring the severity of the incident.

At this time, all mainlanes, shoulders, and three opposing mainlanes are blocked, according to Houston TranStar. Drivers should expect major delays in the area.

Alternate routes for drivers

If you’re heading westbound on Highway 290 this morning, you’ll want to plan ahead:

  • Exit before West Road and take frontage roads where possible.
  • Consider using Beltway 8 to connect southbound toward I-10 or northbound toward Highway 249 as alternate options.
  • FM 1960 and West Little York can also serve as detours to reconnect with 290 beyond the crash site.

What’s next

Authorities are working to clear the wreckage and spilled load, but there’s no word yet on how long the closure will last.

This is a developing story. We’ll update as soon as more information becomes available.
