The Phoenix Public Library, in partnership with the Phoenix VA Health Care System, has brought library services directly to veterans at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center.
On July 1, the Bookmobile made its inaugural monthly stop at the VA campus. The mobile unit carries about 2,500 rotating items, including large-print books, Spanish-language materials, gardening seeds, Culture Passes and popular fiction and nonfiction. The unit is Wi-Fi enabled, air-conditioned and ADA accessible with a wheelchair lift. It also features interior and exterior display monitors, a children’s reading bench inside and a 20-foot retractable awning for shade.
During the kickoff event, veterans, their families, caregivers and staff checked out more than 30 items, and new library cards were issued. The monthly visits give veterans the chance to browse, place holds for pickup and return items without leaving the VA campus.
The Bookmobile will continue visiting the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center on the first Tuesday of each month, with the next stop scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 2, from 10 a.m. to noon.
