SAN ANTONIO — As San Antonio’s trade industries experience significant growth, the demand for skilled technicians is on the rise. In response, Universal Technical Institute is establishing its first campus in the city dedicated entirely to skilled trades training.
The campus, currently under construction, will offer programs in aviation, welding, electric, HVAC, and other essential trades. School officials recognized the local need for skilled trade workers and decided to address it by opening this new facility.
Tracy Lorenz, division president of Universal Technical Institute, highlighted the city’s growth. “There’s actually about a 19% growth that San Antonio has seen over the past few years. We’re expecting another 15% growth by 2028 in San Antonio alone. So that need alone will help us place our students in appropriate businesses within the San Antonio,” said Lorenz.
The institute aims to match students with programs that align with their career goals and connect them with industry partners. This approach not only creates new opportunities for students but also supports San Antonio businesses in need of skilled workers.
Additionally, the institute plans to have high school field representatives visit local high schools to discuss the opportunities available through these alternative pathways. Enrollment for students begins on September 1, Labor Day, with programs officially starting in March of next year.
