LEMON GROVE, Calif. — A grand opening and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is expected to take place on Thursday for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Lemon Grove Substation, following its closure more than a year ago.

This closure stems from a historic flooding last year on Jan. 22, when torrential rain came down, damaging communities, homes and infrastructure across San Diego County, according to a press release from the San Diego Sheriff’s Office. Among those impacted was the Lemon Grove Sheriff’s Substation, which has been providing law enforcement services to community members and residents in the City of Lemon Grove since it incorporated in 1977.

The press release said that the substation sustained major damage after 24 inches of water came surging through the building’s ceilings and walls. Despite the unexpected closure of the substation, deputies were able to continue their day-to-day patrol operations in Lemon Grove.

According to the press release, deputies and staff at the substation were immediately relocated to the nearby Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station while the damage was being assessed. Heartland Fire and Rescue also opened its fire station for deputies, where they worked for 19 months.

Meanwhile, the City of Lemon Grove worked closely with the San Diego Sheriff’s Office to repair and renovate the facility affected by the floodwaters. In mid-July this year, the renovation for the Lemon Grove substation was complete, and deputies as well as staff were able to move back into the facility shortly after, officials said.

“The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office and the Lemon Grove Sheriff’s Substation want to thank the City of Lemon Grove, as well as our law enforcement and community partners in the East County, for their support and generosity during the renovation process,” The San Diego Sheriff’s Office said in the release.

The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at noon at 3240 Main Street in Lemon Grove. According to the City of Lemon Grove in an Instagram post, the event will have food and refreshments for attendees, courtesy of the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of San Diego County and public tours of the substation will also be offered.
