Stefanos Tsitsipas returned to winning ways at the US Open after fighting back to beat Alexandre Muller.

Tsitsipas is desperately in need of having a good US Open, after losing five of his last six matches leading into the New York major.

The Greek even decided to sign up for another tournament a week before the US Open, but Tsitsipas’ decision backfired on him.

Despite all the negativity currently surrounding his career, Tsitsipas has begun his US Open campaign with a victory.

The US Open has statistically been Tsitsipas’ worst-performing Grand Slam tournament, even when he was a top 10 player.

Since his main draw debut appearance in 2018, Tsitsipas has been unable to surpass the third round and was handed a potentially challenging first round draw against world number 38 Alexandre Muller.

These concerns looked to be becoming reality for Tsitsipas after he lost the first set, but the 27-year-old managed to fight back and beat Muller, 4-6 6-0 6-1 7-6(5).

This is Tsitsipas’ first Grand Slam win since Roland Garros, and he spoke in his post-match press conference about what this could do for him going forward.

“It puts me back in a good place,” said Tsitsipas. “It revitalises my game to have that win, it definitely adds vitality and helps me feel alive again back on the tennis court. I find it a very important victory for me to be back because I have not had many of those lately.”

Stefanos Tsitsipas reveals what his father is bringing to his team after returning as a coach

Not only has Tsitsipas had a tumultuous time in terms of results, but also in terms of his coaching situation.

Tsitsipas split from Goran Ivanisevic after his first round loss at Wimbledon, and has subsequently returned to having his father, Apostolos, as his main coach.

After re-hiring his father, Tsitsipas believes that he has gained a lot of wisdom back into his game.

“Wisdom. That is what it brings me,” answered Tsitsipas. “I feel like it’s something I need in my life and my career. He brings a lot of wisdom into my game, I don’t know how to define it exactly, that’s up to you to decide but I would just leave it to that.”

Tsitsipas will now look to continue his positive feelings and match his best result at the US Open by reaching the third round.

The world number 28 will play Daniel Altmaier in his second round match at the US Open, who he has beaten in their only previous meeting that came at Roland Garros last year.
