PHOENIX – A motorcyclist was killed in a collision Tuesday evening after making what police called “an unsafe pass” on a Phoenix street.

A motorcycle and a car collided around 5:20 p.m. near 22nd Street and Campbell Avenue, between Indian School and Camelback roads, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The motorcyclist, 21-year-old Camden Allen Riedy, was in critical condition when officers arrived at the scene. He died after being taken to a hospital.

Detectives with the Vehicular Crimes Unit processed the crash site and released preliminary findings, which indicated that the motorcyclist was riding in a bicycle lane.

What led up to crash that killed motorcyclist?

“Information suggests Camden made an unsafe pass on the right while traveling westbound on Campbell Avenue and utilized the bike lane,” Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez said in a media advisory.

The collision occurred when a woman driving a car in the same direction attempted to make a right turn as she approached 22nd Street.

The driver remained at the scene and did not show signs of impairment, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
