Let’s take a walk! Host Sophie Sullivan joins author Charles Fleming, as they explore a Silver Lake neighborhood full of history, beauty and oddities. It’s the Music Box Loop, one of dozens of walking routes Charles has put together for his books, Secret Stairs and Secret Walks.
The stairs connecting these Los Angeles streets might provide a great workout now but before the automobile became our primary means of transportation, these stairways were essential. They took you to shops, schools and the red car – the trolley that connected LA neighborhoods. Some of these stairs are beautifully painted and are popular photo op spots for tourists and locals.
But as Charles explains, the stairs also offer a great way to explore a community, discover hidden neighborhood treasures and even make friends with people you run into over and over again.
Want to explore but are physically limited? Head to Google Street Maps. Many of these stairways can be navigated online. It’s also a great way to preview your route if you are preparing to head out on foot.
So slip on your most comfortable walking shoes, you’re going to need them as there are a lot of steps on these stairways, and explore LA like they did 100 years ago. And check out Charles’ books.
