Multiple railcar theft suspects were placed into custody and several Chicago police officers were hurt in a Wednesday incident.
According to an update from Chicago police, officers tasked with investigating burglaries came upon a group of suspects that were observed removing items from railcars in a railyard Wednesday morning.
As officers approached, the occupant of an SUV near the railcars got behind the wheel and sped toward them, striking an officer.
Multiple officers then fired their service weapons in the direction of the SUV, with the driver continuing to speed toward them. The suspect struck a marked Chicago police car before the vehicle came to a stop. That suspect was taken into custody.
At the same time, another van was observed fleeing the scene, and officers radioed details to Chicago police. Other officers found that vehicle in the 7100 block of South Yale and tried to stop it, but the driver rammed it into two marked squad cars as they attempted to flee.
During that incident, a 30-year-old man attempted to flee the van, but ultimately was struck by the vehicle as it sped away. That man was taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital.
The van was found unoccupied in the 7500 block of South State Street, police said.
The officer who was hit by the SUV in the railyard was taken to a hospital in good condition, while two other officers were taken to hospitals for observation, Chicago police said.
The suspected driver of the SUV was also hospitalized in good condition, and multiple firearms were recovered from the vehicle, police said.
Two officers who had been involved in the attempted traffic stop were hospitalized in good condition, according to Chicago police.
The occupant who had tried to flee the van and was struck was hospitalized in critical condition.
Since shots were fired, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is conducting an investigation into the use-of-force, and the officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duty for at least 30 days in accordance with department policy.
