SAN ANTONIO – Hours ahead of the start to the Labor day weekend — a big piece of the 1604 expansion project on the Northwest side is finally finished.
The newest flyover ramp to I-10 is now open, making travel much easier for people coming from 1604 W.
The project started four years ago. People who live and work in the area have dealt with traffic and construction since then as crews built the ramp.
It’s the third of four flyover ramps set to help with TXDOT expansion of loop 1604 on the North side — it cost roughly $279 million.
Segment 2 of the project connects the opposite sides of 1604 and I-10. That part is scheduled to be finished in 2027 and comes at a projected cost of $463 million.
The overall project will expand the loop between Bandera Rd and I-35, bringing it to a total of 23 miles — with a roughly $1.4 billion price tag.
People we spoke to who live and work in the area said they believe this will help the area run more smoothly once all the construction is done.
Work on the entire expansion will continue through 2028.
