CHARLOTTE – The Elon University women’s soccer team (3-0-1) produced a royal effort Thursday night to remain undefeated on the season, blanking Queens (0-2-2) in Charlotte, 3-0.

Gabby Hoschek and Jenna Abousaab found the back of the net in the first half for the Phoenix, with Ava Hellner adding a second-half tally. Five different Elon players finished the night with a goal or assist, led by Hoschek’s three-point effort.

In goal, Katie Bisgrove made a pair of saves for her third consecutive clean sheet, as the Phoenix extended its shutout streak to nearly 200 minutes of game time.

The win was Elon’s third in a row and extended its unbeaten streak against non-conference opposition to 10 straight.

How It Happened

  • An early Queens foul set up the Phoenix with a free kick opportunity from just outside the box. Hoschek took the set piece for Elon in the fourth minute, approaching the ball from the left side before curling a shot that ricocheted off the left goalpost and behind the Queens goalkeeper to make it 1-0 for the Phoenix.
  • Elon continued to apply pressure in the opening 15 minutes of the first half, with Hellner and Gia Milano attempting shots for the Phoenix. In the 16th minute, Grace Gelhaus attacked from the left wing and sent a cross into the box that bounced off a defender and found the foot of Milano, who nudged it to an open Jenna Abousaab. On her first touch, Abousaab rolled the ball into the bottom right corner of the net for Elon’s second goal of the night.

  • The Phoenix struck again in the 60th minute thanks to a perfect tic-tac-toe finish. With the ball on the Queens side of the field, Hoschek sent a pass forward to a sprinting Jess Beck. With control in the right side of the box, Beck played a cross to the middle of the box toward Hellner, who headed the ball out of the air and into the goal to make it 3-0 for Elon.
  • The Phoenix withstood the final 30 minutes of the contest without surrendering a goal to keep the clean sheet and secure the 3-0 victory.

Notes & Highlights

  • Hoschek’s goal was her first of the season and the ninth of her Elon career. It was the first goal Elon has scored this season in the opening 20 minutes of a match.
  • With an assist on Hellner’s goal, Hoschek finished with three points on the night. It was the second time in her career she has notched both a goal and an assist in the same game, with the other coming on Sept. 2, 2024, at Wofford. The junior is the first Elon player to produce a goal and an assist in the same game since Ashlee Brehio and Gelhaus did so in last year’s CAA Championship quarterfinal against College of Charleston.
  • Abousaab’s goal was the first of her career, as the junior added to her two career assists. She also made her first start of the campaign, logging a season-high 40 minutes.
  • Hellner’s header was the third goal of her Elon career and her first of the season. She played 81 minutes in the victory and attempted a team-high four shots.
  • Milano recorded her second assist of the campaign in her first Elon start. She now has an assist in each of her last two appearances and is tied for the team lead in helpers with Brehio and Gelhaus.
  • Beck’s assist on Hellner’s goal was her first of the season and second of her Elon career. The sophomore played 29 minutes off the bench for the Phoenix.
  • In net, Bisgrove posted her third straight shutout to bring her career total to 8.5. The sophomore goalkeeper has not allowed a goal in the last 193:28 of game action, dating back to the second half of Elon’s season opener at VCU.
  • Elon has now turned in three straight clean sheets for the first time since doing so in the last game of the 2023 season and the first two of 2024.
  • The Phoenix outshot the Royals, 14-8, on the night and finished with a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Through the first four games this season, Elon has outshot its opponents, 66-36.
  • Megan Dwyer, Jessica Hill and Alexis Pierce all went the full 90 minutes for Elon’s back line.
  • In total, 18 players saw action for the Phoenix on Thursday.
  • Elon improves to 5-1-0 all-time against Queens with the triumph and has won both meetings since moving up to Division I.
  • Elon has now won or tied in its last four road games (3-0-1) played in North Carolina.
