La Liga has reported alleged racist chanting directed towards Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe during Real Madrid’s match at Real Oviedo earlier this month to Spain’s National Police.
The chanting was alleged to have taken place at Oviedo’s Carlos Tartiere Stadium during the league match on August 24, with the league reporting that chants imitating monkey sounds were heard on multiple occasions.
La Liga’s complaint, which has been filed to Spain’s National Police General Commissariat, includes supporting evidence from the television broadcast of Movistar’s TV programme ‘El Dia Despues’, alongside video footage that has been widely shared on social media.
Madrid won the match 3-0 thanks to two goals from Mbappe and one from Vinicius Jr.
Vinicius Jr has been persistently targeted with racist abuse at multiple stadiums in Spain and on social media platforms.
In March 2024, the 25-year-old Brazil international broke down in tears during an emotional press conference as he said that racism was getting worse because perpetrators were going unpunished and he felt “less and less like playing football”.
In June 2024, three people were sentenced to eight months in prison in Spain after being found guilty of racially abusing Vinicius Jr in May 2023 during a La Liga fixture at Valencia. That was the first conviction for racist insults in a football stadium in Spain.
In September, a fan was fined €60,001 and banned from sports stadiums for two years by a Spanish high court for racially abusing Vinicius Jr online. A Mallorca supporter was also sentenced to one year in prison for racially abusing Vinicius Jr and Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze in separate incidents.
In May this year, five supporters were handed suspended prison sentences and fined for racist chants directed at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr during a match against Real Valladolid.
