The couple behind Indian pizzeria Onion Tree Pizza Co. have expanded into Indian fried chicken at their East Village restaurant with Crispy Karma since July. And now, co-owners chef Jay Jadeja and Raquel Wolf-Jadeja opened a second location this month. The new Crispy Karma debuted in Times Square at 245 West 46th Street, near Eighth Avenue, on Friday, August 15.
The fast-casual ghost kitchen shop serves up Indian chicken, tenders, and wings in flavors like the creamy malai, spicy Kerala, and achari — available in sandwiches or part of plates and bucket combinations. There are also roasted chicken, halal, and gluten-free options. Then there are house-made chutneys like tamarind-date and ginger-sesame, plus sides like chaat masala gunpowder fries and green papaya slaw. It’s operating inside the Picnic Digital Food Court. The couple opened Onion Tree Pizza on Long Island in 2020 and then in the East Village in 2024.
The glory that is fig season (in Queens)
Astoria is leaning into one of the best and underrated summer fruits with a festival next month. The Astoria Fig Festival will feature participating restaurants like Sotto La Luna and Cafe Renis with fig specials from Monday, September 1, through Sunday, September 7. That last day will be a whole block party with tree care, a community cookbook station with fig recipes, a raffle benefitting Astoria Food Pantry, and a neighborhood potluck (with online registrations). It’s run by the 31st Avenue Open Street organization.
