The Chicago area is home to the safest and wealthiest suburb in the U.S., according to a new ranking, and two other Chicago suburbs also made the top 10.
Personal finance website GoBankingRates revealed the 50 “safest and wealthiest cities in America” and three Chicago suburbs made the top 10 on the list, with one taking the No. 1 spot.
The list analyzed 1,000 cities with the highest average incomes and evaluated them for violent and property crime rates, giving each city a score based on income and safety. The ranking used data from the U.S. Census American Community Survey, Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey, Zillow Home Value Index, Federal Reserve Economic Data, AreaVibes, and the FBI.
Western Springs ranked as the safest and richest city in America, with an average income of nearly $300,000 and a property crime rate of 2.65 per 1,000 people.
Other cities, including Winnetka and Kenilworth, also nabbed top spots on the list – No. 7 and No. 8, respectively – and while both have higher income averages, they had worse property crime rates, the ranking reported.
Midwest locations dominated the top spots on the ranking, with the No. 4 spot going to Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin; the No. 5 spot going to Huntington Woods, Michigan; and the No. 6 spot going to Ottawa Hills, Ohio. Upper Arlington, Ohio, rounded out the top suburbs at No. 10.
Several Illinois cities made the full ranking as well, with Libertyville at No. 16, Hinsdale at No. 17 and Deerfield at No. 28. Park Ridge, Elmhurst, Wilmette, LaGrange, Glen Ellyn and Naperville also rounded out the top 50.
In total, Illinois saw 12 cities on the 2025 list, up from just four in 2024. Several other Midwest locations also made the cut, some for the first time.
