Today’s Big Stories

1. Officials declare end to Harlem Legionnaires’ outbreak after 7 deaths

The New York City Health Department today declared an end to an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Central Harlem that killed seven people and sickened more than 100 others.

The agency last identified someone in the area with Legionnaires’ symptoms on Aug. 9, it said in a release. As of Thursday, 114 people had been diagnosed with the disease, including 90 who were hospitalized. Six remain in the hospital.

2. J’Ouvert and the West Indian Day Parade: Street closures, security and more

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to turn out for the city’s annual celebration of Caribbean culture on Monday — and officials say they are prepared to keep revelers safe.

From start times and street closures to the security measures attendees can expect to see, here’s what to know.

NY1’s Emma Barnett, meanwhile, got an inside look at the prep work it takes to pull off the festivities.

3. IFC Center marks 20 years with film retrospective

The IFC Center is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a retrospective series showcasing two decades of independent cinema in New York.

Beginning this week, the Greenwich Village theater is screening “20 Films for 20 Years,” a lineup of one movie from each year since its opening in 2005. Selections include “Me and You and Everyone We Know,” “Boyhood” and “Parasite” — films that helped defined the center’s place in New York’s film culture.

4. Stories of bravery and heartache emerge from Minneapolis church shooting

Moments after rifle blasts reverberated inside a Minneapolis church, Catholic school children wearing plaid jumpers and green polo shirts ducked into pews, some jumping atop friends to protect them from the carnage.

Amid the horror carried out Wednesday by a shooter who authorities say was “obsessed” with the idea of killing children, stories of bravery and tragedy have emerged as families share accounts online. At least five children and one adult remained hospitalized Friday.

5. Fed governor Cook seeks court order blocking her firing by Trump

A lawyer for Lisa Cook today urged a U.S. judge to let the Federal Reserve governor keep her job while she fights President Donald Trump’s attempt to fire her in a stunning assault on the central bank’s independence.

The case in the U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. could provide Trump with expansive power over the Fed, which has traditionally been shielded from political pressure as it makes tough, complicated decisions about whether to raise interest rates to fight inflation or lower them to encourage hiring and economic growth.

6. Trump revokes Secret Service protection for former VP Harris after Biden had extended it

President Trump has revoked former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection that otherwise would have ended next summer, senior Trump administration officials said today.

Former vice presidents typically get federal government protection for six months after leaving office, while ex-presidents do so for life. But then-President Joe Biden quietly signed a directive, at Harris’ request, that had extended protection for her beyond the traditional six months, according to another person familiar with the matter.
