East Los Angeles — Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis announced today she will run for Congress if voters approve Proposition 50 this November, which would redraw congressional boundaries in California.
“The working people of Southern California are under assault by the Trump Administration – and I won’t just stand by and let it happen,” Solis said in a statement. She pointed to attacks on labor unions, immigrants, affordable housing and healthcare as reasons for her campaign.
Solis would seek to represent the redrawn 38th Congressional District, which would be located primarily in southeast Los Angeles County.

Her supervisorial district now encompasses unincorporated East Los Angeles and much of the Eastside within the City of Los Angeles. Term limits prevent her from seeking a fourth term on the county board when her current one ends next year.
Before serving on the Board of Supervisors, Solis represented the San Gabriel Valley in Congress from 2000 to 2009 before serving as President Obama’s Secretary of Labor.
Solis announced her attempt to return to Congress with endorsements from L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, U.S. Rep. Laura Friedman, State Assemblymember Jessica Caloza, and other public officials.
Her quick entry into the race has consolidated support, but also stirred some frustration, the Los Angeles Times reported. One Democratic consultant told the paper it appeared Solis had “completely sewn up that seat in one night of making phone calls.” Still, labor leaders were quick to rally behind her, with one saying, “Unless Cesar Chavez himself is running out there, Hilda Solis will get our support.”
