Tottenham Hotspur want to sign a winger before Monday’s transfer deadline and AC Milan star Rafael Leao has emerged as a target, according to Miguel Delaney.

Thomas Frank’s side started the season well with two wins and two clean sheets in their first two games of the Premier League, but fell to their first defeat in a toothless performance against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

The Lilywhites are now keen to add more firepower to their squad before the end of the transfer window, and they have discussed a move to sign Portugal international Leao in a surprise deal.

Spurs have already added Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons to their forward line this summer in deals worth over £100m combined, but after allowing captain Heung-Min Son to join LAFC and seeing midfield playmaker James Maddison suffer a serious knee injury during pre-season, they want more.

Leao, who has been described as ‘one of the best players in the world’, is someone who club chiefs have raised as a potential option for the position, however, a deal is expected to be too complicated to complete in such a short space of time.

While a winger is seen as the preference, the club would also be open to signing another attacker as they believe Simons is capable of playing in a wider position if necessary.

The club have been strongly linked with a move for Man City star Savinho in recent weeks, and the Brazilian is open to a move to north London ahead of the deadline as he wants to play more regularly to earn a place in the Brazil squad for the World Cup next year.

However, as it stands, Man City are currently blocking any deal despite Spurs being willing to spend big money to make a deal happen, as they believe in the player for their project and don’t believe they have the time or options to replace him so late on.
